| Characteristics: | High-alpine mountain tour in a gorgeous setting. The Middle Schwarzhorn is the most challenging of the "Seven Summits". | ||
| Demands: | Stamina, sure-footedness and alpine experience are all required! From the Zwischenelendscharte there is no marked path; easy climbing on a short stretch in the summit area – for the less experienced we recommend making the ascent with a certified mountain guide! | ||
| Ideal season: | July - September | ||

| How to get there | Travel to Malta From Malta – past the Fallbach, (the waterfall with the greatest height in Austria) – on the Malta Valley High-Alpine Road to the starting point at the Kölbrein dam. |
||
| Starting place: | Car park at the Kölbrein dam (1,931 m) | ||
| Ascent: |
From the car park follow the long motor road, alongside the reservoir, as far as the Osnabrücker hut (2,022 m). Then, follow the steep Tauern High-Altitude footpath (no. 502) up to the Fallboden (2,334 m), where you turn off on the footpath (no. 538) to the Zwischenelendscharte (2,675). There you need to head for the south-eastern ridge of the Southern Schwarzhorn. Keeping to the eastern side of the ridge, and crossing steep boulder terrain with no marked footpath, you will reach the connecting ridge between the Southern (2,924 m) and the Middle (2,932 m) Schwarzhorn. The higher of the two summits has a cross on top, and the ascent involves some easy climbing along a boulder ridge. |
