Duration: 6 days
Characteristics:
Trekking in the realm of the silent mountains The Kreuzeck Group – the southernmost mountain group in the Hohe Tauern – is somewhat overshadowed by its famous neighbours. But that’s only because its highest summit just falls short of the magical height of 3,000 m. Instead, the Kreuzeck Group radiates a special kind of appeal on account of its multitude of small mountain lakes and lonely high cirques! And across this forgotten paradise, the Kreuzeck High-Altitude Footpath offers a magically beautiful trekking route with fantastic views: on a clear day you can even see the "glacier giants" in the north and almost as far as the sea in the south!
| 1st day: Arrival at a Tauern Alpine establishment |
2nd day: |
Characteristics: ideal "limbering up" day, in a terrific alpine landscape. Easy; altitude difference: 800 m; 4 hrs. |
3rd day: |
Characteristics: the day's stages across this lonely high-alpine landscape are very attractive and offer wonderful views but are also pretty long. This is historic ground too: there was prospecting for gold here in the Middle Ages! For some stretches sure-footedness is required (Löcherwände and Goldgrubenschartl areas); in early Summer be careful when walking across glacial cirques! Moderately difficult; altitude difference: 600 m, 7 hrs. |
4th day:
Characteristics: a fantastic day and certainly the climax of a trekking route that is superb by any standards; it includes gorgeous mountain lakes, breathtaking panoramic views and the ascent of one of the main summits of the whole mountain group. |

5th day: Characteristics: another marvellous but long leg of the tour; almost exclusively it follows the main ridge of the mountain group; according to the map it crosses no fewer than 8 (eight!) summits; certainly this is the day with the most panoramic views; from the point of view of alpinistic difficulty, it is comparable with days 3 and 4. Moderately difficult; altitude difference: 400 m, 8 hrs. |
